The Gospel Ends Racism
As the nation remembers Martin Luther King, JR today, I am in awe of the mighty power of the gospel. I am so thankful for the "mystery" that the Apostle Paul speaks of in Ephesians 3. There he says: This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
Dr. King spoke against racism and its ills until his life was taken from him by a madman that did not understand the gospel. Dr. King had a vision that included all people, irregardless of their ethnicity or background. This was a mystery that many people did not understand then and sadly, many still fail to understand. Dr. King's vision was rooted in this Gospel mystery and so on this day of remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, JR I am thankful for the vision that he proclaimed in difficut and turbulent days in our country.
On this holiday, we must remember much further back in time as well. To a day when the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross so that all of humanity, people from every tribe, tongue, and nation could be reconciled to the Father through the perfect work and person of Jesus Christ. This is a profound mystery that has been revealed to us in Christ! May we look back over all those that have fought and will continue to fight against any form of racism, and may we all see the Christ who died on the cross and understand the radical mystery is not that people of different skin colors can get along, but rather the real mystery is that God reconciled sinners to Himself through Christ. This most definitely gives us cause to celebrate!
There is no place for racism in the Christian faith and there is no room or excuse for it. Jesus died to reconcile us....we should rejoice in modeling this reconciliation with all of his creation in our lives. The way we truly see and end to racism is through the advancement of the Gospel!
